……and we’re inviting you to join us on what we are referring to as First Friday Walks – not too many guesses needed ‘cos they will take place regularly on the first friday of every month and we’ll be walking….somewhere

the time has come to sort out your sketchbooks, charge your batteries, wax your walking boots and anything else you can think of and get out into our countryside.

100 day countdown
’100 day countdown’ is a project organised by Bristol’s major public gallery The Arnolfini, who will be coordinating projects that coincide with the Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change.

Our aim is to reflect on the 100 Days (from 29 August – 6 December) that lead to the conference, with artworks and events designed to raise the public’s awareness of the seriousness of our global climate situation.

As well as creating works we see our role (Walking the Land and Dominic Thomas) as unfunded facilitators in the process – helping to put artists in touch with one another, channeling ideas, helping to coordinate and arrange for additional help with any activities, arranging publicity and resulting exhibitions of work.

In addition, we hope artists may wish to broadcast material and notices here on the blog pages of our website.

The focus for projects is The River Severn (one aspect of our local landscape that will be irrevocably changed by climate and also the proposed Barrage).  Beyond this we don’t want to prescribe what you may or may not want to work on, where or how this is undertaken.

Some of you have already  kicked off with ideas about collaborative projects and we would like to invite artists to continue to share their thoughts and publish ideas to one another.

As mentioned in an earlier email, the severn will be doing it’s thing on august 22nd with one of the year’s biggest bores

(have a look on www.magnificentsevern.co.uk and for tide times: www.severn-bore.co.uk/2009.htm)

This could offer a good starting point for ideas and making contact.

Please get in touch (with us or the whole group) with any comments, ideas or suggestions

meeting outside the Museum in the Park, Stratford Park, Stroud
cost: free
contact: 01452 812224 & 01453 756064

Walking the Land artists invite you to join them in making art work that celebrates, reflects and responds to the trees in the tree collection here in Stratford Park. As part of an ongoing study of how artists and non-artists value trees, Walking the Land offer support in studying and observing the trees, considering their biology, aesthetics and cultural significance and in identifying what it is about them that resonates with us.

Using these studies you will be encouraged to complete a piece of work on the day that can be incorporated into a temporary ‘Tree Gallery in the Park’. In addition, a selection of the resulting artworks will form an exhibition to be arranged later in the year and also feature on Walking the Land’s website eGallery Participants will need to bring their own art materials, cameras, sound recording equipment, notebooks, etc.

‘thinking about…Food’

Our fascination with food is reflected in countless TV programmes, magazines and dozens of new celebrity chefs. Increasingly we’re being asked to think more deeply about the subject…to consider where food comes from, farming practices, it’s preparation, appearance and taste.

Artists have a long history of interest in food’s visual qualities, but other subjects arise as they examine it’s progress from sea, river or farm through to the plate.

Organised jointly by Sally Pearce of The Old Passage and ‘Walking the Land’, the exhibition ‘thinking about…Food’ includes works by painters, printmakers, poets, photographers and sculptors who examine food’s visual, cultural and ecological impact.

Yummy!

Take part in voting for the winner of The Old Passage Art Award – the Public’s favourite artwork from the collection.

A series of guided, creative walks with ‘Walking the Land’
dates: Saturday 6th, 13th, 27th June
time: 9:00 – 12:45
place: The Old Passage,Arlingham, Gloucestershire. GL2 7JR
cost: £7.50 Booking essential

t: 01452 812224 & 01453 756064 e: info@walkingtheland.org.uk

Landscape, walks and journeys are Walking the Land’s source of inspiration and the subject for their artworks and installations.Britain’s longest river provides the subject for these walks, as it flows through Gloucestershire and close to ‘The Old Passage’ on it’s 354 km journey to the sea.

The Severn’s ferocious reputation, it’s famous Bore and the second largest tidal range in the world, has long been held in awe by navigators, naturalists and artists. With plans for a huge barrage project to harness the River’s power now at an advanced stage, the state of the River could be changed permanently.

These morning ArtWalks of around 5 Km alongside the River starts from The Old Passage Inn at Arlingham. Participants will be invited to make their own artwork and examine ‘the walk’ and the River as their subject, perhaps reflecting on it’s fragility. During the walk, you will be guided by photographers, artists and lecturers; Tom Keating, Richard Keating and Kel Portman, who will offer creative guidance, help and advice about subject choice, technique and process.

A selection of the resulting artworks will form an exhibition on our Walking the Land eGallery.

You’ll be back just in time for lunch, so book a table at The Old Passage
